Don't know if any of you saw Zaikov the other day. But this impressive looking, well bred late developing 3YO is one to watch. The second foal to get to the races from the good race mare, Wait a While.....he is a handsome gray and the spittin' image of his Mom. If this guy stays sound...no telling what he'll become? TJ

This is the 2nd Pletcher 3-year-old to run lights out in a MSW at Gulfstream and be the next big thing. How does he do it???

Fasig's Saratoga sale has historically been a destination for some very creative thoroughbred marketers (if you will), don'y you think? So what's a little presale understanding between a sales company and a consignor...as to what a commission may be if 1/ the individual actually sells, 2/ it does not sell, or 3/ some other creative arrangement ?

As for Keeneland...those who engage on that turf must be prepared for just about anything, don't ya think ? Seems that can be rough and tumble/slippery territiory to play in, maybe even moreso for the inexperienced, or faint of heart .

All that fun-stuff being said, I expect you're aware that contracts vary from sales company to sales company, state to state. Fast forward...sometimes horses (some quite high priced) are sold in good faith, only to be returned (per conditions of sale/contratc) for issues not discovered (although rescindable sale[s] items nonetheless) until after the sheets are printed, and results are published.

Reality is...sometimes what was a real sale, turns out to be a real return, but (due to timing) shows as a sale on the sheets, and in the quick to go to press publications.

As for the two examples you referenced in your post, do you know (absolutely, positively, without a shadow of doubt whatsoever) for sure what occurred.

I was both right and wrong -

I know for a fact the Value Plus "sale" was bogus.

I was mistaken regarding ZAIKOV (2010 Distorted Humor/Wait A While colt) as he was an "out" at the 2011 Saratoga Select Sale (he was injured prior to the sale).

The following year at the 2012 Saratoga Select Sale Todd Pletcher signed as "agent" and would not identify his principal when buying the Medaglia D'Oro/Wait A While filly (WAIT NO MORE) for the sale topping $1,575,000. This was the sales-topping buyback to which I mistakenly referred. Pletcher trains for owner/breeder, etc.

People have every right to buy their horses back, or protect them from selling for too little. However when the number is significantly higher than real market value or live money, the farce is apparent and artificially inflates average and gross for the sale.

ZAIKOV is an interesting horse and could be a significant 3 year old.

Here's an article referring to the Zaikov buyback. It was an unusually poor sale and the buyback rate was nearly 40%, up from the previous year's 22%. TJ

How are you? My bad...I thought the article was referring to Zaikov, but that wasn't the case. They just mentioned the colt Zaikov, who we were talking about. That's where the confusion came in...I thought you were referring to Zaikov but it was his 1/2 sister by Medaglia d'Oro who is in question. I would imagine he will be picked up by Pletcher as soon as they allow the 2YO's on the grounds. Sorry about that, TJ

Shades of Graydar and Cross Traffic....all big maiden winners first time out. All were freakishly impressive, then the time off between starts? Could be soundness issues, but this one seems to be training pretty good for his comeback.....but 9 months off could spell trouble. Interested to see how he does? TJ

He came back better then ever....went 3/4's in 1:08.3. Don't know if you've seen Chad Brown's Bakken, another late developer who has been just as impressive as Zaikov. I'm expecting these two lightly raced, speedy horses to clash at Gulfstream Park. TJ
