Orb Works Great for Preakness (Video)

Postby TJ » Mon May 13, 2013 1:34 pm

Orb had a fantastic workout today at Belmont Park...he worked a 1/2 in 47.18. Orb went off his 1st 1/4 in 24.47 and his final 1/4 in a sparkling 22.71 seconds. Then galloped out 5/8ths in 59.54 with Jennifer Patterson on board. Shug, who isn't one to show much emotion said, "the work was breathtaking...it sent a cold chill up my back." Guess everyone else will have to contend with an even better Orb in the Preakness. Watch Orb's work below. TJ

Nice, but would rather have seen something at Pimlico.

Hi Dub,
That's a serious move for Charlie at Churchill Downs...but it is Baffert's trade mark. A move that Orb just made is not the norm for Shug. With less than a week till the Preakness, it looks like the probables have finished their training. Itsmyluckyday worked between races at Monmouth the other day in 47.20. The Lukas' three, along with Mylute and Govenor Charlie all worked at Churchill Downs today. Departing's 1/2 mile work yesterday at Churchill Downs. Add the recent withdrawal of Normandy Invasion and Vyjack from the Preakness. The only one left to breeze is Goldencents....if he does? O'Neill often gallops them into a race with only two weeks in between. So the entire field is pretty well set to go with only 5 days remaining till the Preakness. What do you guys think...is there a Triple Crown on the horizon? TJ

Just my two cents and worth that much, I have so much respect and admiration for Shug M. that I actually think we could possibly see another TC winner. Thanks for posting that work, I thought it was impressive.

Governor Charlie being rested and them all running in that slop.

He posted a great time for his workout, plus he was a track record setter in his previous race - will they be able to get to the one true speed horse here?

I will wait to see the odds but will be placing a bet on the Governor if I get decent each way odds. (we get 1/5 odds first 3 places over here in Graded races, so 5/1 or better and if your placed its money back)

Cannot see him out of the first 3.

Can't see Orb after a huge effort in the slop winning this.

And no Verrazano a few weeks ago he was the next Triple crown winner......

Hi Dub,
Govenor Charlie's work was a good one....no doubt. He did set a track record at Sunland in his last race along with two other horses that day over a rock hard lightning fast strip. Be forewarned, maiden's ran 6 furlongs in 1:08 that day, so don't get too excited about that track record. Another Baffert horse, Midnight Lucky also set a track record that day. When she ran back, she was the second choice in the Oaks off that record breaking 8 length win. She went right to the lead and wasn't involved with the trouble that occured during the running of the Oaks. Although she ran well, she weakened through the lane and finished 5th beaten about 10. Concerning Verrazano, he's far from finished and I haven't given up on him. But there were no expectations he could be a Triple Crown winner, the 1 1/4 was always suspect as I repeatedly said. I won't give up on Verrazano till I see him run over a fast track. He never looked comfortable running over the slop in the Derby and was spinning his wheels all the way. He came out of the race with a cut on his hind leg (not an excuse, just a fact) and V is getting a well deserved break after playing catch-up to make the Derby. He will be heard from again. TJ

My point TJ was that the Governor has speed and is a FRESH horse.
Will he get an easy lead and be able to dictate?
If so he will take some catching imho.

Yes Veranzano is still one to note for the future, as is Normandy Invasion and Lines of Battle don't think the slop helped all 3 horses.

It was a pity it rained, Orb coped and won.
We will always be left with what if it didn't rain scenario....

Hi Dub,
I understood your point and it is a valid one. I just wanted you to be aware that the track records were being given away at Sunland Park that day. I believe the pace will be well attended with the likes of Goldencents, Itsmyluckyday and Titletown Five. Goldencents and Itsmyluckyday didn't run a lick in the Derby so they will be full of themselves after running 17th and 15th respectively. So these three horses should keep the pressure on Govenor Charlie. Seemingly setting up the perfect scenario for Orb once again. TJ

Orb certainly does look good and how he galloped out was more was impressive. He will be extremely tough at Pimlico. I can smell the Triple Crown for him and if so it coundn't happen to a better owners ( The Janneys and the Phipps). The jockey is also a big plus, Joel Rosario is riding with such confidence its scary. I am rooting for ORB

There's nothing wrong with Verrazano other than being a speed horse. Drop him back to a mile and watch him roll like the tide.
