Steve Coburn Finally Apologizes

Postby TJ » Mon Jun 09, 2014 8:30 am

He apologized today on Good Morning America....to everybody. I for one accept his apology and wish California Chrome, Coburn, Sherman and the rest of his connections continued success. TJ

TJ I am like you and think he showed class my owning up to his mistake.
It was an emotional time right after Chrome lost and here you have a microphone
stuck in your face. Every day in racing when we have a cheaper claimer lose a
race we are disappointed. I can't imagine the disappointment of losing the
triple crown. His lash out was uncalled for by all means but a part of me
totally got where it was coming from.

Hi Jim,
They do look for those spur of the moment comments and try to get that awkward, foot in your mouth response. Look at Costas, trying to bait Mr. Evans into commenting on Coburn's statement. Mr. Evans knew better then to respond and Costas is (IMHO) about the lowest of the low and doesn't deserve being the host of any racing telecast's.
Coburn seemed sincere enough and I guess he realized he could have shut the door for Chrome in upcoming big races, which he deserves to compete in. Chrome's other partner Perry Martin and Sherman had to be humiliated by what Coburn said. Now that the apology is out there, it will create a better environment when Sherman calls any racing office to enter Chrome in future races, without that awkward feeling left by Coburn's comment. TJ

The Bad News...intended or not, Coburn delivered a blow to horseracing.

The Sad News...Coburn's bitter/angry comments/rants damaged/hurt the game/industry that so very many are passionately committed to. His so-called apology sounded hollow (as far as I'm concerned). Coburn's an adult, not a child...and his comments/rants have undoubtedly hurt/upset/repulsed/insulted many who truly love/care for their horses, and so much about the game.

The Good News...bravo California Chrome for his fantastic efforts (win or not)...bravo trainer and gentleman Art Sherman (and assistants/grooms) for a job well done...congrats to jockey Victor Espinoza for doing his very best.

The Silly News...one thing's for sure, Coburn has single-handedly convinced the thoroughbred world that his naming of his (and partner's) racing stable Dumb Ass Partners was a dead-on bull's-eye.

Respectfully

Hi FOS,
Nice to hear from you. As I said, I do accept his apology and it was something that had to be done by Coburn. To me I thought he was sincere...to others, such as yourself he wasn't. Though such a debate is senseless at this point and my license to dispense drugs for humans is expired, though I do have some left over "ace" I can throw his way:>) It was said by an emotional man, who was at the height of emotion, right after his horse lost his bid for the TC. Then Coburn (who is thick headed for sure) tried to drive his off base idea about the TC series home once again the following morning to no avail. Maybe he finally realized, if his idea was the rule of the TC series...there would have been only 3 horses in the Belmont Stakes....California Chrome, Ride On Curlin and General A Rod, this alone speaks volumes for the ignorance of such a rule and his knowledge of racing. How about the years when there would be none to face the winner of the Belmont Stakes, does the Belmont Stakes then become a walkover and the TC just given away because that horse was the last horse standing? His opinion was absurd to say the least.
Bottom line is, he had to apologize, if for no one else, for the rest of Chrome's connections and most importantly, for his gallant homebred. Of course his comments will stick and on top of the task at hand, to bring California Chrome back to the races in top form...had he not made a public apology it would have left Art Sherman in the unenviable position of feeling awkward when he next enters his horse. Possibly even restricting where he might prefer to run in his next start. It's all ready assured he won't be heading back to NY for a while and will most likely stay on the west coast and point for the BC Classic. No doubt Mr. Coburn did FUBAR with the best of them:>) Here's an article Steve Haskin wrote concerning this debacle. Best Wishes, TJ

I'm not too convinced that the apology was real. I'd be crying too if all that lovely sponsorship money was going to dry up. Waaah, I'm ashamed, Waaah, all this crying is affecting my sinuses - where's my Breathe-Right strip?

Hey TJ ,yes Haskin's article was forthcoming and captured the moment. It's strange how racing is said to be a dying sport until there is controversy and wow ! how polarising it becomes. The strange thing is that even though I never thought for a second that Chrome would win the Belmont, I found myself very impressed at his run considering the obstacles he faced coming into this most demanding of challenges and now I am in his corner come Classic time where obviously he will be more comfortable. Honestly if you delete Coburn's rant from the weekend then the horse comes out of this with honour and dignity just like his trainer. Anyway in Art Sherman's care I am sure in the fall he will be a stronger fresher animal and may just turn the tables. My best friend in racing in Australia a very accomplished trainer named Guy Walter died suddenly 2 weeks ago and he always loved the life he lived through horses as "you are always looking forward to something". Let's hope that now after a dizzying weekend that "Dumb Ass Stables" has relinquished that moniker once and for all with renewed hope for the future.

I want to see what happens when it comes time for CC to go to stud. I wonder if he gets the Sunday Silence / I'll have another treatment. I mean he's not so special where I see a farm HAS to have him. Those comments might have been his ticket to japan.

Hi Wilf,
I agree, Haskin is a very good writer and knows when to turn the page and move on. Though I expected more from CC and after watching the race a number of times I came to the conclusion the TC will always be a tough go and not just because of the 5 week time-frame. The NY jockey colony cuts no one any slack who comes to NY to win the TC. Looked to me like Chrome was climbing after Victor allowed him to settle in behind horses, both sides and in front of him, the boys had him surrounded. Big Sandy can sting pretty good when the kickback hits you.....I wish Victor would have gone on with him when the opportunity presented itself early on....but that's another story:>)
I agree Art Sherman will have CC ready and will have all his options open now that they put Coburn's tirade behind them. So sorry to hear about the loss of your friend, may he rest in peace. Here's a video of your friend, after a recent group I win. Thought you would appreciate seeing the clip. All the best to you, TJ
