Volunteers for DNA Study WANTED
DNA samples from horse from the American families,
family 3-N, family 4-F, and family 23-B WANTED
Owners of TB horses that are tail-female to any of the
American families, family 3-N, family 4-F, and family
23-B who are willing to donate a hair sample and swab
a mtDNA sample from the inside of the horse's cheek.
I need more DNA samples from the American families
to help complete my study.
PURPOSE:
Participate in an mtDNA project of which one goal is
to identify and connect the American families with
their English roots through their mitochondrial DNA
and conduct research in maternal inheritance.
Please contact Loren Bolinger at
[email protected]
for further information.
Yours truly,
Loren

Fred's Mom was (IS!) Pirate's Widow. I can't say I understand that number/family thing beyond that I saw Turn To and The Axe listed on the link above.
I'm still laughing at the mental image of your mares throwing themselves at Boomer's gate.
Of course I looked up Fred's damline - he seemed to be a most impressively independent little soul, and not to take anything at all away from Boomer, I think that type of trait has a lot to do w/ the dam. (And anyway, Boomer's tail female line is a a stellar one, 2f, the same as the legendary Round Table whose full sister Monarchy was Boomer's 5th dam
The designation at the very bottom of the pedigree, the 'tail female' line, is what's germaine in this context. The alpha-numeric designations began as a way of organizing the most productive female lines. This current study and one done in the UK three years ago examine the differences betw the mitochodrial DNA of the different female lines. The DNA in the mitochondria controls energy production at the cellular level. Unlike most nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA is inherited only from the mother, and isn't recombined each generation, ergo Fred's and his Mom's mt DNA is the same Whirlaway's, and Boomer's is Round Table's, etc.
My stallion and one of my geldings are 23-b. Email me if you want me to pull some hair from my stallion, I would have to ask my trainer to get it from the gelding.

Gotcha. Bits of college biology are starting to dift back now...........
I miss Fred. He was a very unique character in his 2 short months.
Of course I still have "Rita" (she is bred back to Boomer again) and I have another HTP mare. Rita is by Hail The Pirates o/o an Axe mare. I also bought a mare this year that is o/o a Hail The Pirates mare by Noble Nashua. The other mare is actually leased out this year. She came from Boston (retired sound after 71 starts...a rarity in itself! ) and was in real need of a new home when I needed another mare like a hole in the head.........so of course I bought her
but did lease her out. Will be interesting to see how they compare....though the mares look nothing alike. Rita is 15.3H and looks like The Axe in chestnut. Inca is a 16.3H leggy bay. Only thing they have in common is a sweet personality.

Good luck with her. After Doublete's recent situation leasing a mare out...I hope you are able to keep close tabs on her. 16.3 is a big mama! Sounds like the recent paddock sharing quandry my mares (15.2 & 15.3) found themselves in. They were dual Alphas 'til a 16.3 mare called Lighten Up Tiny showed up.

On the contrary - you are cordially invited to collect some
DNA for my study. I recently collected La Cueva, Glorita's
sister. I can mail the DNA kits to you or if you're in
Albuquerque, com'on down to the farm and I will give you
the DNA kits and a demonstration on how to do it. It's
actually quite easy.
I probably just overlooked your mares. I've been known
to do that. I'd been going down various lists for mare
owners to contact, but it has been slow and tedious. I
did not mean to slight you or your mares! I've collected
about 150 mares myself, to date.
You might want to have another look at my Lazy Lode (Arg)
babies, including the 2005 ones. Did you ever breed to Devon
Lane and Lazy Lode (Arg)? I was so exhausted and beat up
during the breeding season that I didn't do much else except
put one foot ahead of the other and trudge onward.
Yours truly,
Loren
