Keeping a mare out of season

Postby emmad » Sun Feb 12, 2006 4:23 pm

Apart from Regumate does anyone have any other products or tips for preventing a mare from coming into season?

Thanks in advance

OSU was doing a study using marbles to make the mare recognize a faux pregnancy, but it only worked on certain mares and I'm not sure if vets are even using it in practice yet as research in the infantile stages. Another research vet I know had a higher success rate.

It works with camels

Yes, inserting a marble into the uterus is currently used. It seems to work really well for some mares and not at all for others. The average time it takes the body to recognize the 'false pregnancy' is 3 months. After that the body usually gets rid of the marble and the mare comes back into heat. You can then chose to repeat the precedure.

I'll have to talk to our vet. We have a mare in work that is a pain in the butt when in season. Consistently kicking the truck and leaning on everything. Couldn't imagine racing her like this as picking she would not be happy in the gates.

I have a show mare that I successfully used depo provera on for three years. It didn't keep her totally from coming in season but it certainly made her more comfortable. I have no idea though whether it might contain any substances that would "test" for racing.
