Retained Placenta : Differing opinions

Postby Shannon Inkster » Tue Mar 14, 2006 2:00 pm

Hi,

I was wondering what everyone's protocol is with giving Oxytocin shots for a retained placenta. I have heard 1cc every 8 hours, 2cc every half hour and 1.5 cc every 2 hours. Which is correct?

Thanks,
Shannon

This may be stating the obvious but what did your vet recommend? Why wouldn't you go with what your vet recommended? I usually just go with their recommendations or I find a new vet if I don't have confidence in the one I am using on the current consultation.
best regards Brendan

These recomendations came from 3 different vets. I'm wondering why such differences in opinions.

Hmm. Our answer was one shot and then flush the mare.

After 2 hours we consider it a retained placenta and start the mare on 0.5 cc IM every hour. Lots of mares will respond to the first or second injection. After a few hours we will start to give 1 cc IM every hour and tie a dry towel to the amnion/placenta.
After 12 hrs we start bute and TMS. I worked at a farm where they had problems with retained placentas. So, unfortunately I have lots of experience with it. Tying the dry towel to it makes a huge difference. (Picked up that trick at a teaching hospital.)

Removing a retained placenta is a job for a good repo vet. Oxytocin should stimulate the mare to get to work pushing the placenta out, but it can also cause a mare to continue pushing after she has expelled it, and she can push her uterus out. My guess is the vet starts with the smallest dose.

Along the lines of Lindros dry trowel trick, I've also heard you can tie a water filled sleeve to the amnion. The additional weight is supposed to help detach the placenta.

There will be discouraging times. But a life without horses;

Shannon,

If it helps, human obstetricians have considerable variability in their oxytocin regimens as well.
