Fappiano Inbreeding??

Postby Karie » Mon Apr 17, 2006 7:31 pm

I have an Unbridled son and was approached by someone wanting to breed his Sefapiano to him....
I told him the inbreeding was too close and that I didn't want to breed her and he STILL wanted to.. I tried to explain that I own a Cryptoclearance mare and I bred her to a different stallion because the inbreeding is too much...
Anyone have an opinion on this? I would love to hear it.

I'm not a big fan of that close of inbreeding but plenty of others are.

hi Karie...hi guys

To exclude even the possibility of 3 x 3 Fappiano, without knowing all the other pertinent info regarding the stallion (by Unbridled) and the mare (by Sefapiano), is a bit harsh (from my perspective).

For what it's worth, Fappiano was a fabulous individual with a wonderful temperment and a generous way about him. He was one very special horse.

Best to you.

Respectfully

I am not a fan at all of that kind of inbreeding. The banjo kind.

On the other hand, I have a gorgeous colt by Rocking Trick out of Schwank (3x3 Clever Trick) but there is enough to like in the rest of the cross... and I had quite a bit of "support" for it.

So I would have to say it depends -- and of course, you have the Mr. Prospector above Fappiano to contend with, while Clever Trick has Icecapade so is more "recommended"..

It is not nearly so bad since your horse is a grandson and the mare is a granddaughter. It gets really ugly when the sire is a son of the broodmare sire.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Fappiano inbreeding

Fappiano was the most successful conduit to Mr. Propsector when inbreeding to him. (Mr. Prospector) Mr. Prospector has not enjoyed particularly good success when inbred with only 52 horses who have won Graded Stakes races when inbred to Mr. P. Fappiano is by far the most successful conduit, appearing in 18 of the 52 horses who won at least one G3 race or better. Seeking the Gold, Fortyniner, Conquistador Cielo and Woodman and maybe a few others appeared with some regularity but significantly short of Fappiano. There were, however, NO horses that won at least one G3 race or better with Fappiano on the top and bottom. The number "52" is hard to evaluate as we don't know exactly how many times an inbreeding to Mr. P has been attempted. For some perspective, Northern Dancer, the most successfully inbred horse, has a staggering 984 horses who were inbred to him who won at least one G3 race or better. While ND is some 8 or 9 years older than Mr. P, he also had >500 fewer foals than Mr. P to start the ball rolling, so to speak.

So, with NO horses who have won at least one G3 race or better when inbred to Fappiano and the fact that Fappiano has enjoyed excellent success when bred to other sire lines, I personally would not attempt to defy the odds by attempting to inbreed to him. JMHO

This guy was sooo shocked that I didn't want to breed his mare.

I am not a fan of ANY INBREEDING that close in the pedigree..
Thanks :)

I don't think the amount of inbreeding is that bad (TBs inbreed way less than other breeds) but it is the previous results that you want to look at and that would indicate that it is not a good cross. :P Now if the results had proven otherwise I'd say go for it provided the mare and stallion had conformation that complemented the other.
