This thread is one heck of a story. Quick question-would a DNA test quickly resolve parentage issue or at least rule out Abstract as the father and Pie Rise as mom? Wouldn't the Jockey Club test gratis just for the human interest factor alone? Or am I way too sentimental?

AfleetAlex#1 Fan,

I know you are interested in a story, but you have everything you need to determine if your filly is from Abstract Pie Rise. Scottie owns Abstract? or at least you know he stands at cross country ranch. You also know that Pie Rise is with Ricci Rathka. You own the filly. If all parties will consent to a DNA sample a lab should be able to confirm what you are hoping to be so.

You can pursue the paternity independent of the Jockey Club if you wish.

End quotes.

You have the power, no one else can do this for you. Save your allowance so you can have the tests done.

You really don't need anybody to write the article for you. Bloodhorse's definitely run some before with a very young person contributing. Haven't seen her in awhile but she got multiple things on the website. What I'd recommend doing is writing it and, if you really want someone here to get in on it to make sure it looks good, they can proofread it.

The thing is, article submission generally involves query letters and whatnot. On the Bloodhorse website there's a phone number to contact the magazine (859-278-2361). Maybe give em a ring and ask what they require for submissions in terms of length, to whom, etc. I bet your age/circumstances would be an asset (human/equine interest story) in getting the submission taken but be as polite as you can manage should they say no. Wouldn't want them telling a friend who works at another publication that you weren't easy to deal with. Oh, and don't ask for them to point you to a rival publication--they tend to get annoyed at being used as secretaries.

I'm sorry, Jordan, I don't "see" an article here. You have received ALL of the assistance necessary to identify your filly's parents. It is now completely up to you to just follow it up.

The "mystery" is solved.. and I believe I read somewhere in the postings that you were given the horse, for free, and it was completely understood that the filly was not registered.

You said it would be a good article once we had already figured all that out.I still ahve no idea who her mother is because people arent really helping a lot any more.Even though I have a lot of help at the begging I can still use some help the Jockey Club wont give me any information to have my filly DNA typed to Pie Rise and Abstract for any price.

Thanks!

Jordan

Do I have this straight? You were given the horse and knew ahead of time the horse was not PAPERED thus no registration...and parentage unimportant...right?

Jordan, perhaps you should start writing and work with one of your school English teachers for pointers in organizing your story? When I was your age (middle school/just starting high school), we had already been taught to write essays and term papers.

You might get more interest and or help for your story if you start writing yourself. You have lots of material to share in your story: how you got interested in thoroughbreds, what it is about Afleet Alex that struck such a chord with you, how you happened to meet someone who is teaching you about the horses you love and gave you and your family a filly to learn with. You are very lucky to have such people believe in you and support you. And I think you are plenty smart enough to write this story on your own. If you do the first draft, I think you will find people willing to help you proofread it, etc.

I do not think it is fair for you to expect the Jockey Club to give you DNA test info for "free". Nor would I expect them to give information over thephone. I think you will need to learn to write a professional, business letter (and mail or email) this to the Jockey Club requesting information on how to proceed and what fees are involved. Again, your English teacher or parents or their friends should be able to help you with the letter format.

Be prepared for the fact that this only can happen if all parties agree to the testing and you are willing to pay for it.

Hope you are enjoying your filly---At your age I would have loved to have a horse of my own, as it was, I was lucky enough to get riding lessons at least.
