WHY ARE ALL THE BEST MARES IN (IRE) ?
I was told today that all the best quality mares are in Ireland.
Is it because of the rich soil that Ireland offers?

Hi FOS: The chap that told me is from France, and I have become good friends with him.
He said that all the best mares are in Ireland, and not in France. He flew back to France for the French Derby. When he comes back I will ask him the ? about those quality mares in Ire.

I have not lived in Ireland for 25 years, so I cannot speak to the current situation. However, years ago there were several things that made Ireland a producer of exceptional horses: (1) yes, good grass also good labor available to care for horses, (2) lots of wealthy people, many from outside of Ireland who kept and bred their horses there, (3) strong support from the Irish government for breeding programs, including a wonderful National Stud. Ireland was an excellent place to get young horses broken and introduced to training. Also, at that time at least it was a less expensive place to have horses. That may have changed since the Irish economy has seen so much growth in the last generation. However, if they had this kind of a base to build on from the past, it would not be surprising if much of it has only improved.

I've met this guy. He's the same fellow that says French Fries are original to France. Everyone knows that good Irish mares were bred through American bloodlines. Better check his passport. You are in CA and with your leaky borders he could be an equestrian spy seeking a green card and a wife.

I think the best mares are in the eyes of the beholder an who their bred too.
If I was jumping to asumptions I would say look at the mares breed to Danehill an Sunday Silence for a majority of the best.
An in the deserts overseas also.
An of course KY,NY, FL,CA.
Plane an simple follow the money trail.
Just a opinion.

Several months ago there was a discussion here re. the Irish wanting to cull a significant portion of their (native?) broodmare population?
If "best quality" equals bloodlines free of Mr. P. & Northern D., that does seem to be what they're interested in buying (for obvious reasons), I'll Get Along being one notable example.
Just my $.02
