Devons Success: Vanned Off?

Postby ZiaLand » Sun May 21, 2006 9:59 pm

Hi All,

Just got the result notification on Devons Success for a win in an allowance race at Hollywood Park (7th) today, and the info says she was vanned off after her win.

Anyone have any information what happened? This is one I'm keeping close tabs on.

Much thanks!

Jorge Periban is the trainer.

The DRF chart says that she was able to walk back to the winner's circle, so hopefully the vanning was just precautionary.

Thanks everyone. Walking to the Winner's Circle is a good sign. Hopefully it's nothing major, then.

When I saw her pulled up after the race, she was "nodding" during the trot back. Then when the jock got off of her, the TVG mike picked up the comment from the jock that "she's a little off". They said then that they would take the horse to the vet to be checked out. that's all I know.

Thanks for the addtional info, Hagginwood. I really appreciate it. I'll hope for the best for this filly.

Louis, do you happen to know Jorge Periban and, if so, could you ask about Devons Success for me? Much thanks.

From DRF:

Devons Success vanned off after win

There were strange scenes in the winner's circle after Sunday's seventh race.

Jockey Corey Nakatani dismounted from race winner Devons Success before he got back to the winner's circle. The saddle was taken off and the horse was walked about 100 yards to the winner's circle for a photo. After that, Devons Success was loaded on the horse ambulance and vanned to the backstretch.

The stewards reported that Devons Success was "off in the left front."

"He was vanned off as a precaution," said steward Scott Chaney.

Devons Success has won three of his six starts.

Thanks for the additional info, Tairaterces. Hopefully it's nothing too serious.

I don't wanna be a wet blanket or anything for asking this but I was wondering, if you're vanned off one day with the nodding action and being "off" and 3 weeks later you come back with a bullet work, does that mean necessarily that it was a minor problem or does that mean hey, here's some bute, work through it kiddo...I know some things just go away and are just soreness but is it really "soreness" wink wink nudge nudge?

I sure hope she's well, I really do. I just get curious when a horse with enough guts and talent to win gets hurt like that. I mean a horse like that'll probably run with discomfort and run well til there's a serious problem. I'd be much more interested in seeing the action of the horse during the bullet and knowing the medication and post-work health situation. See? I told you, totally a wet blanket, sour puss, raining on Laurie's parade although I'm really not that mean I promise, person. Someone please use a wet noodle to cause some trauma to occur cuz I probably am overthinking things.

Nothing wrong with looking at all the angles, Heidilady.

I would hope the vanning off incident was only precautionary and this is an "honest" bullet. If so, she outworked G1 placed (3rd in the Del Mar Dubutante last year) River's Prayer (also by Devon Lane).

Pretty good sign. I like to be the optimist. :D

She may have just taken a bad step and jammed herself. That would make her both head-bobbing lame and able to come back quickly. I'm sure she was x-rayed after being pulled up.

What austique said.. I have a filly that came up on three legs yesterday afternoon. No apparent injury, just some soft puffy filling right above the rear fetlock and would not put it on the ground. We got her in a small grassy "stall", heavily wrapped both hind legs, a couple gms of Bute, grain and water. Today she is just totally fine.

A few years ago I had a lovely little gelding aged 8 with tender feet that won a mile and a half turf starter with a furious finish and he returned for his win photo trotting short so I feared the worst, in the test barn I discovered that he had sprung a front shoe galloping out and fortunately had not incurred any other injury in the mishap. Two weeks later he dominated the series finale going a mile and three quarters at 3/5.............. I tell you this game has you up and down like a brides nightgown!!!!!!!
