Two mares bred... comments?
I am entirely new to the world of thoroughbreds and am trying to learn everything as I go, so I apologize in advance for my stupidity when it comes to breeding race horses
. I recently purchased two mares and have bred both of them to Blumin Affair who stands here in Nebraska where I am located. The mares names are She's Pure Genius and Harold's Angelsings. I am not breeding to sell, but would someday like to race the foals. Any comments on these matches and/or any advice for a better pairing for next year? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Thanks austique. The progeny info in the database is correct. Harold's Angelsings has:
She's Pure Genius - 2000 mare by Beau Genius (unraced do to injury)
Caller an Angel - 2001 filly by Caller ID
Angel's Last Tango - 2003 gelding by Acaroid
Goodnight Nikki - 2006 filly by Friendly Lover (I just got to officially name her a few days ago)
I own She's Pure Genius and Goodnight Nikki.
She's Pure Genius has:
She's Justa Dandee - 2005 filly by Wild Gold.
I also own She's Justa Dandee.
Yukidragon, I'm glad you mentioned GSV as I've been trying to figure that number out for a bit. Does the GSV change over time or does it remain static throughout the life of a horse? Also, what is considered the cut-off for a "good" GSV?

Jason, you need to direct your questions on GSV to George William Smith, who posts here regularly.
As for your mares, She's Pure Genius, appears to be a very good match, pedigree wise, to Blumin Affair. Beau Genius mares were discussed recently in the thread "some pedigree freak will know this". You can refer to that for a better idea as to why I have this opinion.
Basically, it seems Beau Genius mares have produced several successful offspring with stallions that have Turn-To in their pedigree. Blumin Affair has 2x. Also, a cross nick to LA TROIENNE shows up in the successful offspring, your mare has her 3x, once thru Premiering Lady, and twice thru Our Gary. Blumin Affair has the nick thru Dr. Fager.

Colonel, thank you for that information. All the nicking and crossing and what not is something I would love to understand as it seems to be a very important aspect of the pedigree business.... are there any good reference sites or material you could recommend to learn more about that? I read the other post "some pedigree freak will know this." I notice that it says any Turn-To line not named Roberto (which of course is the grandsire of Blumin Affair). Is there a reason to stay away from Roberto? If so what would that be? Thanks in advance for your help, it is very appreciated!

Jason, that doesn't pertain to your mare. The mare from the other thread has Roberto 2x from the dam side.
As for reference material on nicking, if you ask 10 people, you would undoubtably get 10 different opinions. I like to study the pedigrees of stakes winners to see what combination of names pop up more frequently than others, and try to analyze why it worked. Sometimes you find patterns, hence you form your own opinion.
I know a lot of people breed based soley on conformation and physical matches, but I, personally, would never breed without what I considered a good pedigree match.
Here's a couple of good sites that have a lot of fun info. Good luck
