For me it’s only an hour to go to Düsseldorf race-track – and I‘m looking forward to Mellanie’s race and meet BenB again and his family for the first time. :D Mellanie has only four opponents: both the 3yo look very strong on paper, but there is a chance for her to beat at least one of the older mares who have to give her 8 and 10 lbs. :wink:

Düsseldorf race-track is probably the nicest race-track in Germany – considering the landscape around. It is triangular - like Ascot - and has a stiff up- and downhill passage in the midst of that side of the triangular which leads to the slight uphill straight to the winning post.

Three weeks ago the German Oaks were run there and it was in my opinion the best racing day of the season so far with marvellous weather – I hope, this will be again next Sunday. Unfortunately the G1-race with only 6 runners that day didn’t find the class of competitors it deserves.

By the way: only a very few kilometres behind the race-track the valley of the small River Düssel is situated (which gave Düsseldorf her name), in a lime quarry there in a side-valley the relics of the first homo neandertalensis had been found 150 years ago – probably he was the first German.
:lol: :wink:

We were very proud of Mellanie yesterday, she ran fourth and missed the third place by a nose.....However there were not many runners only five, they were very good, Mellanie finished very fast. She was ridden by a girl jockey from germany and they will be reunited in our Derby in a fortnight!!!!
It is the same for getting over a jock from another state in the US

It’s an interesting example of practical handicapping: ratings before and after the race (95 kg German GAG = 110 Internal Classification):

Annatira (5yo, 57 kg) beat Fantastica (3ya, 53), Key to Fortune (3yo, 53), Mellanie Surprise (3yo, 53) and Ticina (6yo, 58) by 1 – 7 – shH - 1 lengths; weight-for-age is 5 kg over month and distance:

Annatira: 81,0 => 81,5
Fantastica: 86,0 => 83,0
Key to Fortune: 86,0 => 83,0
Mellanie: no rating => 81,5
Ticina: 81,0 => 79,5

Fantastica and Key to Fortune showed good performances as 2yo, but up to now haven't made further progress as 3yo, so they are down-rated, Annatira is a consistent handicapper with now 5 wins in 20 races. Nevertheless the 3yo in the race still seem over-rated by at least 2 kg as the 8 length between first and third is not considered, although there was a fight for 3rd place between 3 horses and the margin was after a true run. :shock:

Anyway - it was a nice race, Mellanie is a lovely filly. :wink: The owners were content after the race and were shining bright with pride :lol: - especially when Mellanie's rider told them, she is "definitely" third. 8)

Excellent result for Mellanie BenB - she'll be the better coming into your Derby for having run well against some good competition in Germany and acquiting herself well...plus you have a jockey that raced her well and really wants the ride on her now.
Let us know the date for your Derby and if by any chance - on the web or something - we can catch it being simulcast here in the states or at least provide the video even if there is no parimutual.

There are 12 in our derby, without a number 1 pick to make.
The first prize is for us very much about 40K dollar.
It has been hot (for us) 90 with a drying wind from the east during the last 2 weeks,
thunder ,and rain are forecasted.
Hope there will come a couple of inches of rain.
The track is firm, and probably safed for Sunday, so no workouts anymore.

Ben,

What time would the derby take place in the United States? I would really like to watch her run.

Ben,

I do the math as you being 7 hours ahead of us in Texas, which is Central Standard Time.

What time (where you are) is the race scheduled to run at?

Thanks a ton!

There is an article on the Dutch Derby next Sunday even in our today’s racing paper „Sport-Welt“! The reason is clear: German-trained horses – often Dutch owned – have had a very good record over the past 6 years in that race and two German-trained contenders will run this time.

Nevertheless Dutch champion-trainer Jan Pubben (9 times Derby winner) has 6 of the 12 runners in the race - among them lovely Mellanie Surprise – although there are some doubts on her stamina. She is ridden by Carolin Lippert, one of the best German lady riders at the moment. Let’s hope for the best!
