pine vs. cedar shavings

any thoughts on pine shavings v. cedar shavings? i currently use pine but am wondering about their use as a natural fly repellant.

There are phenols in cedar shavings (leading to irritation of the mucous membranes - more respiratory problems), which is why they are not recommended from horse bedding.

The phenols are also what gives cedar its natural insect-repelling quality, I believe.
