My 13 yr old gelding had some strange sypmtoms yesterday that we nor the vet can explain. He was out all night in the rain, temp was 65 degrees. He ate normal that night. The next morning he charged over to me and was throwing his head around, bobing it up and down and had a wild look in his eye. He ran off and made this weird noise in his throat. When he came back, he made the noise again, I thought he was choking. But no, he chased the other two gelding off like he was gonna kill them, teeth bared and all. He ran back to me stuck out, reared up twice and struck out again, then tried to bite me. When I finally got a halter on him he started muscle trembles. I took him over to the feed shed where he startedeating alfafa hay like he had not eaten in a week. He continued to tremble and had all four legs pulle dup under him. Finally, he stopped shaking, but was still agrivated, laid ears back to the touch, and again bit me. All very uncharateristic behavior!! He is normally very laid back and gentle. He is not crossed with anything..pure thoroughbred. Blood work so far has shown low levels of potassiim and low red cell count. We are waiting on white cell count and organ function test. The vet took about two hours on the outward examine, no bites, not marks, not scratches, no adehmia, not lame, nothing in ears, nothing wrong in mouth. ANY IDEAS??????? Can horses be diabetic??
HELP PLEASE>>..Kelly

Interesting post and I would like to know what the diagnosis turns out to be. I was wondering what reactions the onset of rabies in a horse would provoke. The absence of a bite mark probably rules this out though.

You wouldn't nessarly see a bite mark from a bat, say on the corenet band. We had a pony euthanized about 2 years ago here in michigan with rabies, it was thought that know one noticed anything for this reason. Pony stepped on the bat and was bitten, the bite is so small so as not to be seen like a small gauge needle stick.
