Postby skeenan » Sun Nov 05, 2006 9:23 pm

Lots of horses need homes right now, so I'm passing along those who may be of interest...

BELLA FUMATORI gr. F, 2000 DP = 6-2-6-2-0 (16) DI = 2.20 CD = 0.75 - GSV = 63.12

By Smoke Glacken, out of a Vanlandingham mare. Tail-female to Cosmah. Beautiful girl with lots of potential!

Im just curious, I noticed alot of the New England Canter horses are prices at $3999. Is there a reason behind this number? :)

Hi Skipitgirl,

Yes...CANTER NE is restricted to listing horses up to a maximum of $1 below the lowest claiming tag at the track. Since Suffolk's lowest claiming tag is $4K, $3999 is the maximum price for any horse to go on the CANTER NE site.

Bella is beauuuuuuuuuuuuuutiful...and knows it! :D Her trainer is VERY hard to understand on the phone, so if anyone is interested in Bella but needs some help translating, e-mail [email protected] or send me a PM here.

I believe I read somewhere that Canter won't list them if they cost $4000 or more. I imagine that would be because that's well beyond 'meat price' and so horses with that value would not be considered in as much danger as those valued at lower prices.

She is a Very pretty mare, but I dont know a person who would pay 4k or even $3,999 for a mare with a bow like that.. Carlos is nuts

there are a lot of suckers for greys, shes pretty and a mare. probably betting on the amature or junior who has dreams of owning a pretty grey hunter. its amazing the prices people will pay for their childhod dreams. hopefully she will get a nice home.

Well, one can take a chance and negotiate! :D
As it's the end of the meet at Suffolk now, it may work in the buyer's favor...

Bella Fumatori does not have a bow - she has bandages (over poultice) on in the photo. The only blemish she appears to have is some enlargement in her ankle.

The trainer actually does not own this mare; he said the owners want good money for her due to her breeding...but as Skeenan says...it never hurts to call and bargain! :D

I'd have to agree w/Crystal...that is a really nasty looking bow w/poltice on it...don't see any bandages, but ankle is also large. She is nicely enough bred, but thats a lot of money.

She has plastic "sweats" over the poultice...if you blow up the pic you can see it...bunches of plastic wrap over both front legs; the wrap is bunched on the left front. (sorry, should have explained it better before - wrap, not bandage!)

She is beautiful...I would like to think the trainer (and owner) would negotiate on price...

If anyone is interested in Bella, PM me and I can put you in touch with someone at the track who has a good relationship with the trainer, and might be able to get that $3999 down some.

All horses that are posted here are open to discussion, including criticism, recommendation, and speculation. But I always hate to see this happen to horses that are in well-respected tb retirement programs like CANTER and others.

Criticism or bad-mouthing any horse, including those that one would assume is not at risk for slaughter, hurts the horses that are most likely to go to low-end auction. The horse that is offered at $3999 may very well be listed by the same trainer that offers a $500 'negotiable offer' horse on the site.

What happens when this trainer sees one of his horses picked-apart in a forum, said to have a some injury and not worth it, and it is insinuated that only an idiot would buy that horse from that crook?

The trainer pulls ALL of his horses from the site, says to hell with keeping the horses around long enough to place through CANTER, fielding phone calls, showing them to buyers, etc. He also says as much to all his buddies and discourages them from ever trying to list their horses. The 'high-dollar' mare might be fine and find a good home but what do you think happens to the cheap horses?

These horses are posted with contact numbers for their trainers so I'd encourage anyone that is seriously interested in to call and ask questions regarding price and injury status before drawing conclusions , often erroneous, and spreading them in any public arena. If you feel like the trainer is misrepresenting a horse or is, worse, doing so habitually with the horses that you see on the site, please contact CANTER representatives with your concerns so they can look into it. It is likely that they can clear the matter up to your satisfaction while maintaining the connections with trainers and others that they have worked so hard to establish.

Surely even those who do not agree with the price of a certain horse do not want to see the program break down because of it.
