Barbaro, winner of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), is a possible candidate for Sports Illustrated's 2006 Sportsman of the Year award. The winner will be announced Dec. 4 and featured in the Dec. 11 issue of the magazine.
Although the 3-year-old colt gained national attention for his commanding Derby win, it has been his fight for survival after shattering his right hind leg in the May 20 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) that has kept him in the spotlight. He continues to improve at the New Bolton Center following the removal of his right hind leg cast Nov. 6. His left hind foot, which had laminitis, is also improving.

Barbaro's veterinarian, Dr. Dean Richardson, was Sports Illustrated writer Franz Linz's personal choice for the honor.

hi nancy4487

It's wonderful (and touching) that Barbaro's being considered for SI 2006 Sportsman of the Year honors.

I'd be elated (although likely surprised) if he is actually selected as the winner of the award.

I'll fall over dead from joy if he is actually named the Sportsman of the Year, but just being named as a candidate is the victory for this colt. Everybody knows he's got more character in his right leg than all those other prima donnas have in their entire steroidally-enhanced bodies.

Anytime a racehorse appears in SI it is great publicity for the sport and should be considered a victory.

I'd love to see him win this and get his mug shot on the cover! I am thrilled that this colt seems to be doing as well as he can for right now.

I am also grateful that his owners and connections are so classy and generous and have been so throughout. It would be great for the whole sport to use them as a model.

I would have to agree Freshman...I still have the SI when Smarty's picture appeared on the cover. I think he was the first racehorse to grace the cover in a long time. I also remember when SI would have the winner of the Derby on the cover on a regular basis but they don't do it anymore. That's a shame...so I am pulling for Barbaro to win Sportsman of the Year and grace the cover...believe me, I would be one of the first to buy it out here!

"sportsman" according to Webster is: "a person who is fair, generious, a good loser, and a gracious winner".

You guys may have successfully elevated horses to the staus of "person" on this board but I don't think even the great Barbaro can be desicribe as generious , fair, a good loser or a gracious winner.

Make him sporthorse of the year if you wish but leave sportman of the year to sportsmen and sportspersons.
