Like madelyn said, identifying a TB without any info is impossible without a tatoo.

If your horse's tatoo is faded or hard to read, try to take some photos of it and show them to people, find out how they interpert it. You can even post the photo here and have folks in this forum take guesses on how to read it.

Then call the JC and, as others have said here, they will only charge you for a positive ID. You can elimate many horses that are NOT yours just by knowing your horse's approx age and sex, etc.

Even if there is some guess work involved in interperting a tatoo, it is still possible, using the process of elimination, to identify many horses with great success. The fee is pretty minimal, maybe $30 some-odd dollars (correct me if this is wrong). No reason not to try it.

I can make out "81" in the middle.. need photos of the left and right sides -- I read somewhere you can also try a UV light to help read it.

UV=Ultra Violet Light, or you can use a LED Flashlight. LED=Light Emiting Diode.

You can get a UV light in pet stores as they are used to detect hidden pet stains on carpet.
