Commercial CA stallions

Postby Pav » Sun Jan 07, 2007 9:17 am

Does anyone have any thoughts or statistics on the best commercial (breed to sell) stallions in California? I am looking to pick up a broodmare or two in the upcoming Barretts sale and am in the process of evaluating covering stallions as well as stallions to breed back to.

A couple of stallions on the top of my list include (less than $10K):

Marino Marini
Ministers Wild Cat
Old Topper
Sea of Secrets
Cat Dreams
Comic Strip
Momentum

Thanks!

Good looking Unusual Heat's, Bertrando's and Swiss Yodeler's do well commercially.

The president of Barrett's Sales said it best in an interview after the California yearling sale this year, "What sells out here [California], are Kentucky sired Cal-breds."

Fortunately, in the January Barrett's sale there are a few nice Kentucky bred mares, carrying Kentucky sired foals, such as Devil His Due, Lemon Drop Kid, and Pure Prize.

If you buy one of those mares, foal them out in California, and breed them back to a California stallion, you are the breeder of record for a Kentucky sired Cal-Bred.

Those foals will usually outsell the California sired foals, just as the Barrett's pres. said last fall.

A good Kentucky sired Cal bred is a good bet to be a $25,000 to $50,000 yearling. And as the Cal bred breeder, you are entitled to the breeders awards, which can be significant over the lifetime of a decent race horse.

When you breed back to a Cal. sire, then go to one of the commercially viable California sires mentioned in the earlier posts.
