Oklahoma Equine studs

Postby henthorn » Fri Jan 05, 2007 3:46 pm

Yesterday I travelled south of Norman to Oklahoma Equine (hospital and stud farm). They have six TB stallions of decent quality, and are actively seeking mares with special rates. These are my thoughts on these boys.

RARE BRICK has been transferred from Valor Farm, TX late in his successful career as a regional sire. Sire of two Oklahoma Classics Champions. I didn't evaluate him physically. $1500 fee at time of booking.

CONCERN, son of Broad Brush out of Gr 1 winner Fara's Team by Tunerup. Breeders Cup Classic winner of over $3 million. Compact, fluid mover, good attitude and conformation. Tends to put out noncommercial, sound, talented fillies especially, but hasn't had a BIG horse yet. $2000 fee at time of booking.

DIAMOND, son of Mr. Prospector out of Pure Profit by Key to the Mint. Half or full to two G1 millionaire fillies--Inside Information and Educated Risk. Minor stakes winner of $192K over 22 races. Good size and scope, well-conformed, adequate bone, good attitude. Has one graded stakes winner so far. Fee $1250 at time of booking.

MAJOR LEAGUER by Grand Slam out of Dance Review by Northern Dancer. Half to G1 winners My Review and Another Review. Winner of $75K in 20 starts. Refined, deep angles, lots of scope, good confirmation and attitude. Fee FREE with paid farm fee.

SEMORAN by Phone Trick out of Silk Brocade by The Minstrel, earned over $800K on track at sprints and short routes. Compact and short-backed, nice attitude and conformation.
Fee FREE with paid farm fee.

SEEKING GREATNESS is by Seeking the Gold out of Touch of Greatness by Hero's Honor. 3/4 sib to Rossini and Elusive Quality. Stakes-placed winner, six starts. Good size and confirmation, high-strung. Fee FREE with paid farm fee.

Henthorn, what do you mean FREE with paid farm fee?

BTW, some of these guys are less than fertile. I'd check out the stats if anyone is looking to book to one of these. I bred a mare to Semoran while he was at OSU the year before moving to OEH and he got 30% of his mares in foal per the farm manager. Even at that, "He has to be 'carefully managed".

Additionally, anyone considering any of these might check out the Kansas TB stallion season auction. Unless they have already had it??? Anyway the one last year had several of OEH's stallions and the seasons went for far less than the advertized fee.

Have you been able to check out Dance Master? I think he's at JEH in Oklahoma. He's off to a good start after standing in Florida but I suspect a pretty serious fertility problem based on limited crop sizes. Any info appreciated.

HiGuys,

Aurora I am glad you brought the stallion season auction up!! It will be Saturday January 13. You can see a list of the stallions we have to offer by going to www.kansasthoroughbred.com and then click on auction.
I believe we have most of the stallions listed in the above post. They will go for alot less than the advertized price.

Check out the auction and if you have any questions feel free to drop me a line.

What about Evansville Slew? He's been FANTASTIC for the Oklahoma program.

No fertility problem for Dance Master.

He just wasn't especially popular before he had runners, and wasn't supported or promoted very well by the farm, but once his couple of small crops hit the track he gained in popularity considerably.

From his first crop he had a very good colt named FLAMENCO who earned over $300K and then from his second crop he had a 2yo sell at OBS for $600K who went on to become the stakes winner MASTER OF DISASTER who is still in training.

Thanks to those two from his first couple of crops, Dance Master was bred to 109 mares in 2005 which resulted in something like 71 yearlings of this year. In 2006 he had another smallish book of mares (40) so you're probably looking at only a couple of dozen foals of 2007 for him, but it has nothing to do with fertility. He just wasn't supported or promoted well by Padua which makes me think it's going to be a good thing for him that Jim Helzer came calling showing interest in him and buying him for his JEH operation.

Even with small numbers of low quality mares to work with Dance Master has turned out a lot of winners, a good percentage of them winning at two, and several pretty decent stakes horses. I would hope Dance Master will be very popular in Oklahoma and I think you might see some really good stuf from his 2006 crop of 71 foals (there are almost as many foals in that one crop as he had from his first three crops combined).

Aurora, I didn't clarify the term "fee free with paid farm fee". I believe it is for those who want to board at Oklahoma Equine, but I could be wrong.

Too bad Dance Master is at JEH. If they had the only stallions on earth, I'd just have to quit breeding.

Well, Henthorn, if you want to check out all the new stallions in Oklahoma you will be on the road 24/7 until breeding season is over. Oklahoma appears to be flooded with new stallions from everywhere. I expect that many farms will be forced to cut some real deals. It will probably take a couple of years to sort them all out.

Like Toadie, JEH could not pay me enough to take a mare there. Nothing against the stallions, but disgust over the history would keep me away.

Aurora, Major Henry is quite a find! What a productive female family! Wow! It will be interesting to see how his Seattle Slew blood serves him, since none of her other children are from that line.

Sangue Vecchio, Concern is a compact, well-balanced horse with a good temperament. He was a deep closer in racing style. That's why I've never bred to him. The two mares I considered were either closers themselves or devoid of speed.

I would not send a mare to Concern, even if the fee was free....

A nice up and coming Oklahoma stallion is Kipling. I think he is standing for $2,500 the last I heard.
