She may have been owned initially until his death by Francis Browne, 4th Viscount Montagu (1638-1708), whose seat was the great Tudor house Cowdray House at Midhurst, Sussex, because Cheny's Racing Calendar for 1743 describes her daughter as "Old Montague Mare, being on the Dam's Side descended from the Kind of a late Lord Mountague, of Cowdry in Sussex, a Nobleman famous for his large and fine Stud of Horses in the Reign of Charles the Second". This was Francis Browne, 3rd Viscount Montagu (1610-1682), the 4th Viscount's father.
