| Owner: Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury
Based on the foaling dates of his descendants, the Shaftesbury Turk was probably imported into England around 1670 (earlier than the usually stated date of around 1680), and was therefore probably foaled around 1665. He is owned by Sir Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury.
The GSB says he sires a colt, Lonsdale Counsellor (LC), from Bay Darcy (by Darcy Yellow Turk), a mare owned by Shaftesbury and sold with colt at side to the first Viscount Lonsdale. LC sired Darcy's Counsellor, who figures prominently in early pedigrees. However, Cuthbert Routh's stud book says LC was sired by an unidentified son of the Shaftesbury Turk, and this is probably correct rather than the GSB.
