| Bred by Mr. Pigot (or Pigott) and imported to America by Benjamin Hyde in 1786, who bought *Shark through the Tattersalls auction. He died around 1796 and was noted for imparting great speed to his get.
According to turf historian William Robertson, *Shark was the leading earner up to his time in England, his winnings amounting to 16,057 guineas in cash; the Clermont Cup, valued at 120 guineas; eleven hogsheads of claret; and the Newmarket Challenge Whip (often referenced simply as The Whip). Robertson refers to his dam as the "Pigott mare."
