The GSB says that the Shaftesbury Turk sires a colt, Lonsdale's Counsellor, from Bay Darcy (by Darcy Yellow Turk), a mare owned by Shaftesbury and sold with colt at side to the first Viscount Lonsdale. However, early racehorse breeder Cuthbert Routh's stud book says Lonsdale's Counsellor was sired by an unidentified son of the Shaftesbury Turk, and this is probably correct rather than the GSB.
Lonsdale's Counsellor only recorded progeny is Darcy's Counsellor, the sire of Bay Layton, the equal fifth earliest mare in the lineage of Family 4, from which branches 4-o and 4-p descend; and of the moderately successful stallion [Wood's] Counsellor,
sire of Thunderbolt (1729 King's Plate Winchester, Lewes, Canterbury, Newmarket) and his sister which is ancestress of a number of good horses including Ebor (1817 St Leger), Clearwell (1833 2000 Guineas), Vedette (1857 2000 Guineas, Doncaster Cup, 1858 Doncaster Cup), Gamester (1859 St Leger), Eric (1889 Belmont Stakes) and Ermak (1891 Prix du Jockey Club)
